When Autumn Leaves Begin To Fall

Autumn Leaves

The falling leaves drift by my window
The falling leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song
But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

(Instrumental for 1 minute)

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song
But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Could I Live Without The Internet?

According to Wikipedia, Nairobi is the most populous city in East Africa, with a current estimated population of about 3 million.[1] According to the 1999 Census, in the administrative area of Nairobi, 2,143,254 inhabitants lived within 696 km2 (269 sq mi).[6] Nairobi is currently the 13th largest city in Africa.

So Faircloth, why do you have this picture here?

Because I get tired of always seeing pictures from Africa with lions and tigers,  half-naked Africans in the Bush, African being targeted with genocide, or starving to death. So the image today is another another picture from Africa, one about the city of Nairobi, Kenya.

Yes, Hollywood, there are cities with electricity and running water in African states.

Faircloth, could you live without The Internet?

Of course, but my life wouldn’t be as full.  So much free knowledge is intoxicating:)

When to Hold’em ..When To Fold’em

Yours truly gets to play on a golf cart path bridge which saw about 2 inches of water on its deck, during some flooding a short time ago.  I needed something/someone to show the size of the bridge and realized my wife would resist walking in the water to be my model(size reference object).  So instead of self-inflicted grief  by explaining, suggesting, asking, requesting, and finally just begging my wife(why I needed it done), I decided to do it myself.  I gave her my camera and rolled up my pant legs.

The short story above is similar to a song by Kenny Rogers called The Gambler.  According to wikipedia.com, the song is often characterized as a metaphor for life in that you need to know when to stand your ground (when to hold ‘em) and when to retreat (when to fold ‘em).

Trick Or Treat But No Masks!

The owner of a liquor store in Bridgeville DE posted a “No Mask In Store” sign on the front door of his business for Halloween.  The owner and I chuckled about the sign but he wasn’t joking.  The last thing any liquor store owner wants to see is someone behind a mask, which could aid a robbery, especially on Halloween .

A Single Story

October 30th, 2009
I saw something about Nollywood on an Arab news site.  You’ve heard of Hollywood and hopefully Bollywood, the Indian version.  Well, Nollywood is the Nigerian flavor.  In my search to learn more I found the above writer and was so moved by her talk I decided to share.

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words. OK ;)

The woman in front looks very distraught.  It may be because of the flood waters left on the Heritage Shores Golf Course in Bridgeville DE.  She and her neighbor have properties which border the course.  Behind them is a small bridge  used by golf carts to cross an overfilled pond. The pond is so close to their homes that they wonder if they’ll need flood insurance in the future.

It’s a dramatic picture for their dramatic story.

But it’s not totally true.  Yes, there was a flood behind homes.  Yes, flood insurance is on the minds of both women. Yes, there was a storm. Yes, the women were upset with the water so close to their homes.  But, the woman in front is not reacting this instance to the flooding.

Here’s what happened:

The morning after the storm, I see water covering the deck of small bridge and figure it’ll make a decent picture for blog. I talk my wife, Margo, into coming outside to take a picture of me walking over the bridge to really highlight the flooding.  The step ladder near bridge was to give Margo a little height to make the picture I had envisioned.  Margo took a couple pictures of me and our neighbor, Janet, must have seen us. She comes over and we discuss the flooding situation.  I then decide to get a picture of the two.  Janet see me about to take her picture and tries to hide her face. She had come outside being a concerned neighbor but had not made up her face. That’s why her face is covered and she is not crying.

A picture is worth a thousand words. OK(as I wink right eye)

You’ve Got To Play The Hand You’re Dealt

Never being the one good with words, crossword puzzles and Scrabble have been beyond my Right Brain abilities.

I’ve felt so inadequate around my wife and daughters when linguistic skills are needed. Yes, I’m letting all out, trying to heal.

Now, I’ve found something I can do on the newspaper puzzle page.

IMHO(in my humble opinion) Sudoku is a much better way to waste countless hours figuring out a puzzle.  It has no words. It has numbers but no math is involved. The main skills needed are pattern matching and logic.

I can do pattern matching.

I can do logic.

I  can do Sudoku!

Sudoku.com is a website where you can get billions of puzzles for free!!

It’s Time For A New Programming Project

It’s time I started a new programming project.  Years ago I wrote a web application which acts as a searchable picture database.  In it, the most recent picture was of my grandson about 6 months ago.  The picture above of him was taken about a month ago.  I decided to put this up on my site.  Yeah, it’s not a picture I  would show to my professional photographer buddies, but to “Grampawda” it’s the cutest thing I’ve seen lately. My buddy Jon Falk would understand since he’s been a grandfather many times, however.

It is time consuming and detail-oriented to put a picture up on the site.  Time consuming and detail-oriented sounds like a computer task to me. All I have to do is write a program to do the following:

1.  Proportionally crop a given picture to 576 pixels maximum on any one side. Save the picture with a name like imgXXXX.jpg where XXXX is some number between 1000 and 9999. Put the picture in a folder call “high”.

2. Proportionally crop the same picture to 192 x 132 pixels.  Save the picture with the same name as  above. Put the picture in a folder call “low”.

3. Connect to my database and insert the picture located in “high” with the appropiate mysql command.

4. Connect to my database and insert the picture located in “low” with the appropiate mysql command.

If all this sounds complicated, believe me, this is the simple version:)
